MSc, PhD
I’m Sarthak Matravadia, and I am a dietetics student at the University of Guelph. I am a nutrition scientist, and my wife and I run a dietetics private practice focused on pediatric and family nutrition.
Dietetics is my ‘second career’ as I previously worked in the Natural Health Product industry developing weight “management” products. It was an amazing learning experience, but I couldn’t ignore the fact that I was promoting diet culture. This particularly hit me hard when I became a parent, and I realigned my career track towards dietetics. Parents have a huge influence on the food values their children inherit, and often a poor relationship with food begins at a young age.
Aside from a lack of cultural diversity in the pediatric nutrition space, there is very little inclusion of fathers, something I directly experienced as a new father. It is my goal to help change this, and I am not waiting until I become an RD to start.
Our Instagram account targets dads and moms, and focuses on parents working together to create a positive family food environment. We tease apart the parent-child and parent-parent dynamic, which together can be complex and frustrating for tired parents. I hope to improve the cultural and gender-imbalance in this area, while promoting messages to eliminate diet-culture attitudes so parents can raise adventurous eaters.
