Safura Syed

BSc; MAHN; MSc.AHN

Hi everyone! My name is Safura Syed and I am in the Master of Science Applied Human Nutrition program at Mount Saint Vincent University with combined internship. I co-lead the diversify dietetic Canada FB community to help #diversifydietetics in Canada. While working as a dietary aide in a long-term care home during my undergraduate degree, I realized how the food options available were not suitable for a diverse population. This led me to explore the experiences of senior and elderly first-generation immigrants and how they are impacted by food and meal-time practices in long-term care facilities for my masters thesis. I will soon be starting my PhD at Waterloo in the Kinesiology (Aging, Health and Well-Being) where I aim to expand on this area of research by looking for interventions that increase cultural competency, which will result in improved resident-entered care related to meal time practices in LTC.
