Kelly Tran

BASc, ’21

Hi everyone! My name is Kelly and I am in my final year of the Nutrition and Food (BASc) and Food Security certificate programs at Ryerson University in Toronto.

Coming from a Vietnamese-Chinese background, food has always connected me to my family and cultural traditions. My relatives show love and appreciation to one another by preparing and sharing our cultural dishes.

I grew up in an area of Toronto that is very culturally diverse, with a large proportion of community members being first or second generation immigrants. When I started the nutrition program at Ryerson, I was surprised by the lack of BIPOC representation among the students and faculty. As an aspiring RD, I hope to see the dietetics field become more diverse in terms of culture, ethnicity, gender, etc. so we can provide more culturally sensitive care and cater to the unique needs of our clients/patients.

I strive to continue to educate myself on the lives and experiences of BIPOC, and share my knowledge about my heritage. Thank you to Christabel for creating this amazing page and allowing me to share my experiences!
