Hi, I’m Anika! I’m a dietetic intern at Brescia University College, placed in the Hamilton Health Sciences cohort. I’m passionate about health equity. It’s something I’ve really had to learn and unlearn multiple times during my research and time as a nutrition student. It became my passion and I think it’s my calling!

I started off my second degree in food & human nutritional sciences at the University of Manitoba. This was home. I grew up in a small town where I was pretty much the only POC in my class. I was isolated there, I had to grow up a lot quicker than my peers because of this. It was hard. When I moved to Winnipeg, I felt like I had a choice, a second chance at making friends, and finding my passion. I did… eventually. My piece of (unwarranted) advice is TRUST THE PROCESS. My third year of my FHNS degree was amazing, I travelled (and lived) in India for 4 months doing a project on sugar sweetened beverages and attitudes towards an excise tax – hello health equity!!I then was able to present my qualitative findings and I got second place doing this. I kept following my dreams, my passions and the process. It was discouraging most of the time, but I found the silver lining from sticking out. My personality, and resilience is what got me into Brescia, not my academic holdings. Be yourself, be proud of who you are, take chances and TRUST that everyday you’ll be a better version of you.
